Level Design

Level design is where the levels of the game are laid out with emphasis on an effective way which facilitates easy flow of gameplay.  In addition to this, the development team wanted to incorporate the story and narrative of the project into the level design so that the story would be the driving factor of the navigation through the levels of the game.  As such, the development team decided to have the setting of the project inside a “haunted house” type of environment.

The initial level design layout that the development team designed can be seen in the uplaoded images, which was replicated faithfully in the final versions of the project.  It can be seen that there is a clear path for the player to follow,  which is driven heavily by scripted gameplay events - such as “find the key to unlock the door” type puzzles - that guide the player on where to go next.

The development team decided early on that the level design phase should incorporate the modular approach to level design for use in the implementation stage.  Modular level design refers to the use and reuse of game objects in order to create the levels which allows for rapid creation of levels although can cause the levels to be repetitive.  The development team found this approach to be beneficial for the project due to the restricted schedule of the project and saw to avoiding the levels seeming repetitive by being creative with the modular game objects.
