Theme, Tone & Story

The horror aspect was chosen to be included in the game as it was thought that it would be fun and interesting for the player to experience.  Additionally, it allowed the development team to explore new challenges as the team had never made a horror game before.  Moreover, the team had had fun themselves playing horror games in the past.  Horror games, therefore, had a direct influence on the tone of the project.  Horror games that were chosen as influence for the project were Layers of Fear, PT Demo, and Bendy and the Ink Machine.  The dark, ominous tone of Layers of Fear and PT Demo were taken as tone influence for the project.  Bendy and the Ink Machine’s minimalist art style tone was adopted as a practical solution when it came to the art style of the project.

The story of the game was something that was very important to the development team and wanted it to be central to the enjoyment of the project.  Story and characters can be a driving force that propels players through the game and keeps them interested in what happens.  Firewatch was taken as influence for the story of the project where characters and character relationships take a prominent role in the story and are important for the overall enjoyment of the game.

The themes of the story were of love, guilt and regret.  The uploaded image shows the story flow and initial thoughts of the development team in the planning stages of the project.  The team wanted to tell a story that was interesting, captivating and, ultimately, heart-breaking.  Due to the subject matter within the story of the game, mainly murder and infanticide, the team were careful not to overstep ethical guidelines that would, potentially, cause harm to the players.
